Vesuvius ring

Autor: Piotr Zieliński

Pompeii is one of the best-preserved cities that connects us with antiquity. It was located in the region of modern day Campania, in Italy. In the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, a period of dynamic development was underway, due to Pompeii being one of the most important ports in the region.

At that time, baths or amphitheatres were being built. Many wealthy Romans lived in the city in their sumptuous summer estates. A characteristic motif of Pompeii was one of snakes. These motifs appeared on various elements of architecture and wall paintings. They were associated with wealth and prosperity.

"The ancients had only a vague idea of the volcanic nature of Vesuvius and used to think of it only as a green mountain, covered with dense forest and lovely vineyards here and there," says the book "Pompeii". But on August 24, 79 AD, after years of silence… the volcano spoke with a loud voice and with tremendous force, it razed the city to the ground.

The events that took place there almost 2,000 years ago could be treated as ancient history. Nevertheless, in many ways they are similar to the situation faced by all mankind today.

The ring that I designed for Mr. Przemyslaw is deeply symbolic. It emphasizes not only the power of nature, but also makes us reflect on what is important to us. The main stone is a multi-coloured tourmaline, symbolizing foamed magma. It is set with its top resembling the cone of a volcano. The whole ring is entwined by snakes that smoothly turn into the shank.
